The Department of Homeland Security contends that New York State alone has released nearly 7,000 illegal migrant criminals since the start of 2025, all in line with New York’s declaration to be a sanctuary state. At least 29 of those migrants have a homicide case on their record. The rest have criminal cases ranging from assaults and robberies to sexual offenses. The surprise is that their release came despite Governor Kathy Hochul testifying before Congress that New York State could work with ICE and federal immigration officials in the name of public safety. As a result, ICE is now demanding the state hand over another 7,100 migrants who are currently behind bars in New York. Mike Sapraicone is a retired NYPD detective first-grade and a security expert. He appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to enlighten people as to why shielding these individuals sends the wrong message to the rest of the public.
Sapraicone told host Larry Mendte that he can’t grasp the logic behind keeping several thousand people who should be among the first people a law-abiding state should want to send far away: “I don’t understand how it is not common sense that we work together with ICE and the federal government to take illegal immigrants off our streets. Let’s talk about the safety [issue]; if we have no public safety, we have no city, we have no state [and] we have no country. 7,000 people released in the last year… and we, as a state, released them without notifying the proper authorities in the federal government, even when there’s mandated retainers on these immigration violators and criminals. I don’t understand where the common sense comes.”
Sapraicone says the term “sanctuary city” is a misleading one that hides the paucity of justice for the victims of crime. “The criminal justice system, I learned many years ago, it’s justice for the criminal, okay, and that’s exactly what’s going on here. It’s not justice for us, the people, the public, the working-class people, it’s justice for the bad guys, okay, and that’s ridiculous. And you’re right, the Democrats frame it as sanctuary city is a safe haven- safe haven for who?”
