The Ethics And Effectiveness Of Cloning

With the latest news of former NFL star Tom Brady cloning his dog, the question of ethics of this act has come up. Many are critiquing Brady for that but also questioning the effectiveness of cloning as well. Dr. Arthur Caplan, professor of bioethics at NYU Langone, talked about when cloning can be effectively used in the wake the Brady news.

“Cloning is best used if you want to make lamb chops and pork chops because they come out the same,” Dr. Caplan told host Larry Mendte. “Theres no mental aspect in the pig or the lamb that you care about so we can clone out food… that’s where its best.”

Dr. Caplan also explained what the worst use of this current cloning technology is: “Where its worst is trying to you or me or our pets, we’re not going to get back the same mind and consciousness and personality; that’s what makes us distinct.”
