When Andrew Cuomo announced he would be running to become the next Mayor of New York City he immediately jumped out to the front of the field largely due to his previous tenure as Governor of New York State. Since that day however Cuomo’s lead has slipped as his past controversies have re-surfaced and Zohran Mamdani has been able to convince voters he is the man for the job. Joe Borelli, Managing director of Chartwell Strategy Group and former NYC Council minority leader, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the current state of Mayoral race and where he thinks it may head.
“This is a neck and neck horse race until the last minute,” Borelli told host Larry Mendte. “There really is no way of predicting how people are going to vote in their 4th 5th 6th choices on ranked choice voting… so I still think it’s anyone’s race.”
Borelli has noticed a change in the former Governor’s strategy as the gap between him and Mamdani has closed: “The outside money that’s supporting Andrew Cuomo has shifted a little bit from just doing ads supporting Andrew Cuomo to also doing ads attacking Zohran Mamdani.”
