New Yorkers Unsure If New Traffic Lights Will Help Bike Problem

The New York City Department of Transportation has begun to add small, eye level traffic lights for bicyclists around the city to push for better safety for riders and pedestrians. New Yorkers, however, are unsure if the new lights will be effective in improving safety. Mendte in the Morning sent Natalie Migliore out on the streets of New York City to talk to people about their experiences with bicyclists following the rules that have already been put in place.

“The bicycles don’t follow the rules, they’re constantly jumping in front of the truck, we’re constantly hitting on our breaks and becoming very dangerous,” one person told Migliore. “They have a lane, and they don’t stay in it,” another disgruntled NYC resident said.

One New Yorker believes that punishment is the solution to controlling dangerous bikers: “They should have a scaled down version of what someone driving a car would get for a traffic violation.”
