As the state of New Jersey gears up for a gubernatorial election later this year many issues are being used as big talking points such as taxes, grocery prices, and congestion pricing. One issue that has not garnered as much attention from the top candidates so far is the education of the children in the state and how kids are falling behind. Mike Kelly, award winning columnist for NorthJersey.com, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the education levels of children in the state and the issues that come with that.
“55% of 4th graders can’t do 4th grade, by the 6th grade its 64%,” Kelly tells host Larry Mendte. “The problem here is that a lot of these kids simply don’t catch up.”
Kelly believes that the schools are hurting these children’s futures by not keeping them on track: “There’s kids that are going through school and just being passed along, and then they reach adulthood and what sort of functioning ability do they have?”
