NJ Transit Fare Hikes Take Effect

NJ Transit riders are paying more.

A 15 percent fare hike took effect on Monday, despite two weeks of problems on the railroad. Multiple times, issues caused big delays and cancellations. It led to protests over the weekend with riders calling for the fare hikes to be postponed until NJ Transit's problems could be fixed.

NJ Transit said it needed the extra revenue from the fare hike to fill a budget gap. Beginning next year, the agency will impose an annual 3 percent fare increase.
