Trump Freezes Out The WHO...For Now

President Trump says he's ordered a halt to funding to the World Health Organization. Speaking at the White House, Trump charged that the W-H-O "severely mismanaged" the early spread of the coronavirus – noting that the W-H-O was not on board with his decision to ban travel to the U.S. from China.

“We have deep concerns about whether America's generosity has been put to the best use possible,” the president offered. “The reality is that the W-H-O failed to adequately obtain, vet and share information in a timely and transparent fashion."

On a related note, Trump called out other nations and regions for accelerating the pandemic by following W-H-O guidelines and keeping their borders open to China. Trump said that decision is "one of the great tragedies and missed opportunities from the early days."

In response, the United Nations is knocking President Trump's decision. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says funding for the W-H-O shouldn't be cut while the world is fending off the coronavirus pandemic. He also noted the W-H-O is spearheading global efforts to deal with the respiratory illness. The United States pays about 15% of the organization’s total budget.
