MSNBC's Chris Matthews Exits

Chris Matthews is out at MSNBC. The “Hardball” host announced his immediate retirement at the start of yesterday’s show – much to the chagrin of Steve Kornacki, the NBC correspondent who had to finish the hour.

Chris had reportedly been in talks with the network to retire after the election. But recent accusations of inappropriate flirting by journalist Laura Bassett got him out sooner. His “Hardball” crew found out an hour and a half before he made his statement. Before he left yesterday, he apologized for past comments about women’s appearances. “Compliments on a woman’s appearance that some men, including me, might have once incorrectly thought were okay, were never okay,” he noted. “Not then and certainly not today. And for making such comments in the past, I’m sorry.”

While Chris is leaving MSNBC, he’s not leaving politics. He’s currently working on another book, and plans to “write and talk about politics and cheer on my producers and crew here in Washington and New York and my MSNBC colleagues.”
