Harvey Weinstein's rape trial is officially underway in Lower Manhattan. Weinstein arrived without the walker he’s been using and when asked by a reporter if he thought he’d be getting a fair trial, he said he did.
Once inside, prosecutors delivered opening statements and they went on for several hours describing Weinstein as a rapist and predator who was so powerful that they say his victims were afraid to say no.
The defense also offered their remarks saying that jurors will see that Weinstein is “not the rapist he’s been painted to be.” They intend to show e-mail exchanges between Weinstein and his accusers to try and prove the sexual encounters were consensual.
When it was all over for the day, Weinstein exited using his walker again, but said he’s “confident” about what the result of his case will be. As we’ve been telling you, dozens of women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, but this trial centers around two of them. Testimony is expected to begin today. Weinstein’s trial could take more than a month and if convicted, he could face life in prison.
