Dozens Hospitalized Following NZ Volcanic Eruption

Dozens are hospitalized following the sudden eruption of a volcano near New Zealand. Officials say at least 34 people are being treated for injuries – some severe – resulting from the explosions of White Island volcano yesterday morning.

While at least five people are reported dead, and several others are still missing – officials all say that no one is expected to be recovered alive. As we told you yesterday, nearly 50 tourists were visiting the destination at the time of the eruption. Among them, a number of Americans.

At last check, search and rescue operations have been halted because the conditions near the volcano are too dangerous. But that doesn’t mean officials are sitting back – a criminal investigation has already been launched. Meanwhile, survivors aren’t nearly out of the woods. A number of them – including an honeymooning American couple – suffered severe burns.
