For months we’ve heard how President Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, was in Ukraine...allegedly at the President’s direction. During the House Impeachment Hearings, several people testified that Giuliani was acting on Trump’s behalf – even directing a “shadow diplomacy.” The President has never denied any of that – until now.
In a new interview with former “Fox News” host Bill O'Reilly, Mr. Trump has taken a very different stance – insisting that Giuliani's work for an investigation into the Bidens in Ukraine was not done on his behalf. He also noted that Giuliani has “other clients.” And when he was asked what Giuliani was doing in Ukraine at all, Trump replied that O’Reilly would “have to ask that to Rudy.”
Of course, the timing of this is made more interesting considering comments made by Giuliani – and Trump – in recent days. As we told you before, Giuliani made a couple of media appearance last weekend where he was asked about rumors that Mr. Trump would ‘throw him under a bus’ regarding Ukraine. Giuliani quipped that he “had insurance.” He later said his comments were “sarcastic.”
But to look back at the summary/transcript of the infamous July phone call between the President and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump’s remarks after asking Zelensky to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden could argue that. “Rudy very much knows what’s happening, and he is a very capable guy,” Trump noted. “If you could speak to him that would be great.”
Similarly, Trump himself repeatedly brought up Giuliani in the same conversation where he asked him for a “favor.” When O’Reilly suggested that Giuliani's role as Trump’s personal lawyer suggested he was following Trump’s direction – that was denied. O'Reilly asked, "So you didn't direct him to go to Ukraine to do anything or put any heat on them?" Trump’s reply? "No, I didn't direct him, but he's a warrior, Rudy's a warrior. Rudy went, he possibly saw something. But you have to understand, Rudy, has other people that he represents.”
