Former Dallas Cop Convicted of Murder

A former North Texas cop is facing life in prison for killing a man inside his apartment. A Dallas County jury of eight women and four men has found Amber Guyger guilty of murder. As you’ll recall, Guyger was off duty but in uniform when she shot Botham Jean to death last fall.

Prosecutors focused on Guyger's training arguing she failed to follow Dallas police protocol to either call for backup or practice deescalation tactics. Her attorneys unsuccessfully argued Guyger mistook Jean's apartment for her own and believed he was an intruder. The punishment phase continues today – and she faces between 5 and 99 years in prison.

But yesterday, Dallas County prosecutors called up multiple witnesses and were allowed to introduce texts showing Guyger complained about Dallas' MLK Day parade including saying the parade would end, "when MLK is dead...oh wait..." Guyger is a white and Jean was black.
