NJ Judge Is Getting Death Threats Over Lenient Accused Rapist Treatment

A New Jersey judge is receiving death threats after saying a 16-year old accused rapist deserves leniency because of his good background.

Judge James Troiano turned down a request to charge the teen as an adult because he came from a good family, got good grades in school and was a candidate for a good college. The teen is accused of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl and circulating a video of the assault.

There are now calls for Troiano to resign and a protest is planned for later this week. Prosecutors, in the meantime, have appealed the judge's decision and are looking to have the case moved out of the juvenile system and into the adult criminal court system.

New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg is particularly outraged. She says “It is such an elitist, classic outlook on life. It’s amazing to me that somebody could have grown up, gone to law school, become qualified to become a judge and could have possibly uttered something like this.”
