Stacey Abrams Makes History Giving Democratic Response

Though Stacey Abrams lost the race for Governor in her home state of Georgia last year, she still made a lot of noise. And last night, Abrams made history. For the first time in American history an African-American woman gave the opposing party's response to a State of the Union address.

Referring to her own run for governor, which was marred by allegations of voter suppression, she called for an end to that, saying it’s time for voters to pick their politicians, and not politicians picking their voters. She also called the recent partial government shutdown a stunt and said it was a disgrace – and to that end, Abrams called on President Trump to “speak the truth.” She said the system is rigged to harm working people, because wages are not keeping pace with inflation.

Abrams also said that kids should be focused on success and that it’s awful that first grade students are practicing active shooter drills. Saying that most Americans understand that “caging children and tearing families apart is wrong,” she called on all Americans to tackle climate change, expand health care, and intelligently secure ports and the border.
