Construction at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan is advancing as part of an $11 billion project to modernize the facility by 2035. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is preparing a temporary bus storage and staging facility at the 42nd Street terminal, which will serve as a commuter hub once the main terminal is demolished. This development comes shortly after construction altered bus routes, according to the Port Authority's project updates.

The project aims to create a seamless commuting experience by providing direct access between the new terminal and the Lincoln Tunnel. As reported by ABC7NY, the first phase focuses on reconfiguring ramps that bring buses, primarily from NJ Transit, into the terminal. This involves rerouting buses and deconstructing ramps step by step to maintain operations during construction.

Despite construction-related delays, some commuters believe the long-term benefits justify the inconvenience. "Anything that improves public transit and mass transit is something we all would want," commuter Jürgen Heinrichs said.

The Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia stated that the agency is monitoring traffic impacts and seeking ways to minimize disruptions. The project is expected to convert the area into an interim terminal over the next five years, with a deck over Dyer Avenue temporarily serving as bus storage before becoming green space.
