In New York City on Wednesday, a vigil at Union Square Park was disrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters, leading to a relocation of the event. The vigil, organized by Israelis for Peace, was intended to honor the 1,200 victims of the Hamas attacks on Israel three years ago. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the event, which faced significant interruptions from demonstrators.
The protesters, numbering in the hundreds, occupied the space and forced organizers to move the ceremony behind police barriers. According to i24 News, the demonstrators heckled Mamdani, calling him a "traitor" despite his earlier accusations against Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. They chanted slogans such as "Long live Hamas" and "Gaza will be freed," while also displaying a Hamas flag.
The vigil continued despite the disruptions, with participants lighting electric candles and reading testimonies from both Israeli and Palestinian victims. The event concluded with the recitation of the Mourner’s Kaddish amidst the protesters' chants.
The protest, organized by groups including Students for Justice in Palestine and Democratic Socialists of America, criticized Mamdani's participation in the vigil. As reported by The Media Line, demonstrators accused him of betraying his supporters and failing to uphold his campaign promises.
The event drew criticism from various quarters, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who condemned the protest in a social media post. She stated that disrupting a vigil for the victims while waving flags of terrorist organizations was "absolutely despicable."
No physical confrontations or arrests were reported during the protest, and Mayor Mamdani has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
