Today marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and we remember all of the lives lost on that day and the lives lost due to the recovery efforts. While most people followed along with the tragedy on television, some people were watching it live from their apartment or office buildings across New York City. Warner Wolf, legendary sportscaster, spoke with Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning about his experiences that morning as he watched it live from his home just blocks away from the towers.
“We were about 10 blocks from the World Trade Center; we could see it lit up every night right out our window; when that first plane hit we said it must’ve been a misguided pilot,” Wolf told hosts Sliwa and Mendte. “I guess it was 15, 16, 17 minutes later, the plane came around and hit the other tower and I said oh wow this is no accident; I ran on my roof and I could see everything… I saw the buildings collapse.”
Wolf shared what he saw in the days after as recovery efforts got underway: “It was just a dreadful, terrible scene… I remember one of the responders said it’s bad enough that we have close to 3000 people dead, but it’s the ripple effect of all the families from 3000 people.”
