Has The Odyssey Saved Hollywood?

For years the superhero genre dominated the big screens as studios pumped money into high profile actors and higher CGI budgets to bring in audiences and turn a major profit on their films. Many dedicated movie goers did not like this shift in the industry as they felt those films lacked substance and wanted more meaningful and interesting stories being told. Joe Neumaier, WOR Movie Minute host, spoke with Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning about Christopher Nolan’s newest film and the impact it’s having on the movie industry.

“It’s an extraordinary thing that I think sort of speaks to a couple of things; I think it talks to how hungry people are for something interesting in movie theaters; I think it speaks to people wanting to see something they can’t watch on their phone,” Neumaier told hosts Sliwa and Mendte. “I think it also speaks to wanting to be part of a moment; people have heard about the movie, they want to make the call for themselves, is it good…is it not good… they want to be a part of the conversation; I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Neumaier believes this moment can change the minds of movie studios around Hollywood: “This does make me feel like they can see that the audience has a brain and let’s give them something; it might end up not being good [or] it might end up being as powerful or momentous as The Odyssey is, but give people something of quality.”
