UES Legionnaires' Cases Now At 23

The Upper East Side in New York City is experiencing a growing outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, with 23 confirmed cases reported as of Tuesday. The outbreak is concentrated in the Carnegie Hill, Yorkville, and Lenox Hill neighborhoods. Health officials have identified cooling towers in the area as the likely source of the Legionella bacteria, which can cause a severe form of pneumonia.

During a town hall meeting on Tuesday night, residents expressed concerns about the ongoing situation and demanded answers from city officials. Dr. Alister Martin, NYC Health Commissioner, assured attendees that testing of all cooling towers in the affected area is underway. He emphasized that immediate steps are being taken to remediate the issue.

Council Speaker Julie Menin voiced concerns about the pace of the response, urging the health department to disinfect all towers without waiting for test results. "I'm concerned that the source hasn't been identified," Menin said.

At least 17 people have been hospitalized due to the outbreak, and health officials expect the number of cases to rise as more testing is conducted. The outbreak was first detected late last week, and the Health Department has advised anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms to seek medical attention immediately.

The Legionella bacteria thrive in warm water environments, such as those found in cooling towers. While most people recover from Legionnaires' disease with antibiotics, it can be fatal for those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that about one in 10 people who contract the disease will die from complications.

Residents in the affected areas are advised that it remains safe to use tap water for drinking, bathing, and cooking, as the outbreak is not linked to plumbing systems. The Health Department plans to release the addresses of any buildings whose cooling towers test positive for the bacteria during initial screenings.
