New details have emerged about the daring duo who scaled the Empire State Building's spire on Wednesday in New York City. The pair, initially mistaken for protesters, are actually Russian performance artists Ivan Kuznetsov and Angela Nikolau, who are well-known for their skyscraper climbs. Kuznetsov proposed to Nikolau 1,454 feet above Manhattan, with a banner that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace."
The couple, who have been climbing buildings worldwide without ropes since 2016, were arrested and face charges including burglary, reckless endangerment, and criminal trespass, according to the NYPD. Their story was featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary _Skywalkers: A Love Story_, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
The incident has sparked discussions about security at the iconic building. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, remains a symbol of New York's skyline. The couple's stunt has drawn attention to the growing trend of urban free climbing, which some see as a form of reclaiming architecture.
Despite the legal repercussions, the couple's act of love has captivated audiences, with many interpreting it as a nonviolent expression. The Empire State Building management stated that the incident did not endanger the building's tenants or visitors. The observation deck was temporarily closed but reopened later in the afternoon.
