Fans attending the World Cup match between France and Senegal at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, faced a mix of smooth commutes and delays on Tuesday. New Jersey Transit reported transporting 25,000 soccer fans, while New York state buses carried 12,000 more from New York City. However, some fans experienced long waits for ride-shares like Uber and Lyft after the game.
Despite concerns about potential gridlock, the event proceeded without major issues. According to WABC, an Amtrak switch issue caused delays of up to 30 minutes, but fans were still encouraged to use NJ Transit as the most reliable option. Buses provided by the New York/New Jersey Host Committee were sold out, with 12,000 seats reserved ahead of the match.
The New York Post reported that 30,000 train tickets remained unsold, with many fans opting for alternative transportation due to the high cost of NJ Transit tickets, priced at $98 for a mandatory two-way trip. Some fans expressed frustration with the situation, citing long waits and limited parking options.
NJ Transit initially planned to accommodate 40,000 fans but fell short, moving 21,000 people by bus or train. According to NJ Spotlight News, fans who chose rideshares faced surge pricing and delays. Uber, the official rideshare provider, acknowledged the high demand and encouraged fans to use public transit.
As the World Cup continues, NJ Transit will need to manage transportation for six more matches at MetLife Stadium. The next match, scheduled for June 22nd, will coincide with evening rush hour, presenting additional challenges for commuters and fans alike.
