Following the New York Knicks' historic comeback victory in Game Four of the NBA Finals, the NYPD reported 56 arrests outside Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night. The arrests were made on various charges, including assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal mischief.
The game drew an estimated 10,000 fans to the streets surrounding Madison Square Garden, where celebrations turned chaotic. According to the NYPD, fans engaged in reckless behavior, such as climbing on vehicles and light poles, attempting to flip a taxi, and throwing glass bottles. The police reported that 10 officers were injured during the disturbances, with one officer struck in the head with a glass bottle.
The NYPD had previously announced security measures to prevent large gatherings around the arena, allowing only those attending the game or with specific business in the area. Despite these measures, the celebrations escalated, leading to the arrests. Of those taken into custody, 15 were arrested, and 41 received criminal court summonses.
ESPN reported that the city had approved a permit for a smaller watch party outside the Garden, but Knicks owner James Dolan canceled it due to security restrictions. Dolan criticized city officials for creating a "police state" around the arena.
Yahoo Sports highlighted that the Knicks' playoff run has brought large, passionate crowds to the area, but also noted previous incidents of disorderly behavior. City Council member Justin E. Sanchez emphasized the need for better crowd management in future games.
The Knicks' next and potentially final home game of the season is scheduled for Tuesday, if there is a Game Six, with security measures expected to remain in place. The NYPD stated its commitment to ensuring fan safety while allowing celebrations to continue.
