Should Mamdani Change The Name Of The Ed Koch Bridge?

Zohran Mamdani has floated the idea of changing the name of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge to remove the name of the former New York City Mayor. The calls for this come from LGBTQ+ communities who are unhappy with the way Koch handled the AIDS crisis in NYC while he was in charge. Natalie Migliore, WOR Reporter, spoke with New Yorkers on if they feel Koch’s name deserves to remain on the bridge.

“No… what’s he ever done for us? There’s many many more deserving cultural figures that could be on the bridge,” one person told Migliore. “There’s a reason why we put their names on; I don’t think we should take them off,” another person told Migliore.

One New Yorker that Migliore spoke to doesn’t think he will be impacted by any potential name change: “I just call it 59th Street Bridge anyways; I was here in the Koch era, but I don’t even call it that.”
