Efforts are underway in New York City to increase the number of firefighters on fire engines, a move supported by City Council Speaker Julie Menin and the firefighters' unions. Currently, only 20 out of approximately 200 fire engines have five-person crews, which is just 10% of the fleet. Menin and other city leaders are advocating for five-person crews on 86 engines in the city's busiest areas, citing the need for faster response times to save lives.
In the first five months of the year, New York City has experienced 46 fatal fires, including one that claimed the life of a 61-year-old man in Sunnyside, Queens. Menin emphasized the importance of having more firefighters at the scene quickly, stating, "Behind each of these statistics lies a story of sorrow, a life that is cut short."
The Uniformed Firefighters Association has long advocated for the addition of a fifth firefighter, arguing that it would improve response times and safety. According to Andrew Ansbro, the association's president, "It takes quite a bit of time to assemble the entire team. That's why it's more important to have the first arriving engines having this initial staffing."
However, FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito noted that while the fifth firefighter could help, other factors like blocked or frozen hydrants also cause delays. He stated, "If that first engine stretches the hose line and they're ready to operate, they're going to operate. It happens faster with the fifth firefighter."
The City Council is urging Mayor Zohran Mamdani to allocate $91.7 million in the upcoming budget to fund this initiative. The proposal has gained bipartisan support from Staten Island lawmakers, who recognize the critical need for adequate staffing in the face of increasing fire-related fatalities.
As the city grapples with budget constraints, the push for additional firefighters remains a priority for many, aiming to enhance public safety and reduce fire-related deaths in New York City.
