The New York Police Department is investigating two unusual incidents involving groups entering and exiting manholes in Brooklyn. On Thursday, at least seven individuals were seen entering the sewer system near McDonald Avenue and Colin Place in Gravesend at around 11 p.m., emerging three hours later. Another group of eight descended into a manhole near Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg at 1 a.m. on Friday, reemerging at approximately 4 a.m.
The NYPD, along with the Department of Environmental Protection, conducted sweeps of the sewers and confirmed that the areas were safe and free of hazards. According to Gothamist, the DEP emphasized that entering sewers is illegal and dangerous due to risks such as noxious gases and unstable surfaces.
PIX11 reported that the individuals involved in these incidents were seen wearing gear suitable for hazardous environments. Surveillance footage captured them removing dirty clothing and loading equipment into vehicles before leaving the scene.
Police are investigating whether the two incidents are connected. No arrests have been made so far, and the motive behind these actions remains unclear. Council Member Susan Zhuang commended the response by the NYPD and DEP, highlighting the dangers of entering the sewer system.
The public is advised to report any similar activities by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or visiting Crime Stoppers online.
