New York City is on the lookout for lifeguards to help staff its 14 miles of beaches and numerous public pools this summer. The city is offering a starting pay of $22 per hour, with the lifeguard season running through Labor Day. To qualify, candidates must be able to swim 50 yards in 50 seconds or less and pass a vision exam. Applicants must be at least 16 years old by the first day of work.
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation emphasizes that being a lifeguard is more than just a summer job—it's an opportunity to develop skills that last a lifetime. After passing a qualifying test, candidates undergo a 16-session training program, which includes lifesaving techniques. Successful completion of the program may lead to a full-time position at a beach or pool.
In addition to city jobs, there are other lifeguard opportunities in the New York area. For instance, Happy Swimmers offers positions for mobile events around New York, with pay starting at $30 per hour plus tips. These roles provide flexible, part-time hours and require a current lifeguard certification and a professional attitude.
For those interested in applying, the first step is to register for a qualifying test, which takes place in indoor pools from late October through late February. The city's beaches open on Memorial Day Weekend, and outdoor pools open in late June.
