The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey have launched an investigation into FIFA's ticketing practices for the 2026 World Cup. Announced on Wednesday, the probe focuses on allegations that fans were misled about seat locations and that FIFA's public statements contributed to soaring ticket prices for matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

According to ESPN, New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport have subpoenaed FIFA, seeking internal information about ticket sales for the eight matches scheduled at MetLife Stadium, including the final on July 19. James emphasized the need for transparency, stating, "No one should be manipulated into paying sky-high prices for seats."

The investigation highlights FIFA's use of dynamic pricing, which adjusts ticket prices based on demand. This practice has led to complaints from fans about high costs and seat misrepresentation. Reports indicate that FIFA raised ticket prices by an average of 34% between October and April, according to The Guardian.

Additionally, fans have reported discrepancies between the seats they purchased and those they received. FIFA's introduction of a new "Front Category" ticket option, which offered more desirable seats at a higher cost after initial sales, has added to the confusion. NBC News noted that fans who bought tickets before this change were assigned less desirable seats.

The investigation will examine whether FIFA's ticket release schedule and public statements impacted ticket prices and seat allocations. FIFA has defended the high prices, citing market demand. However, the investigation aims to ensure fans have a fair chance at affordable tickets and accurate seat assignments.
