Fans of 'The Book of Mormon' will need to wait a bit longer to see the show on Broadway. The reopening of the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed to Wednesday due to ongoing repairs after a fire earlier this month. The fire, which started in the spotlight room on May 4, caused significant damage to the roof and electrical systems, but spared public areas of the theatre.
According to Playbill, ATG Entertainment, the theatre's owner, expressed gratitude to the New York City Fire Department and the Department of Buildings for their assistance. The fire was classified as a three-alarm incident, resulting in heavy fire, water, and smoke damage. The New York Department of Buildings had issued a vacate order, declaring the building unsafe until repairs were made.
The BroadwayWorld reports that repairs have progressed, allowing public spaces to reopen. However, the spotlight room remains off-limits. The theatre's box office is operational, and ticket sales have resumed.
Producers are working to ensure the theatre is safe and comfortable for the cast, crew, and audiences. The show, which has been a Broadway staple since 2011, is gearing up for its 15th anniversary, with original cast members set to return for guest appearances.
