The New York City Council has decided to drop its disciplinary case against Republican Councilwoman Vickie Paladino over her controversial social media posts. The decision, announced on Monday, is part of a settlement agreement that ends a First Amendment lawsuit Paladino filed against the Council. The Queens councilwoman had come under scrutiny for posts calling for the "expulsion" of Muslims from western nations.

As part of the settlement, Paladino agreed to delete three specific posts and remove the title "councilwoman" from her personal social media account. The Council, in return, has withdrawn its charges of disorderly behavior. Paladino's lawsuit argued that she was being targeted for her conservative views and claimed that her posts were personal and not related to her work as a council member.

Paladino issued a statement saying, "I am responsible for the content, I never intended to make Council Members or staff feel unwelcome or unsafe in their work environment." Councilwoman Sandra Ung, chair of the ethics committee, also released a statement, saying, "I believe the resolution strikes the right balance between protection of Council staff and the First Amendment liberties of Council Members."

The settlement concludes a months-long dispute that began after Paladino's posts were deemed "unbecoming of the office" by the Council. Without the settlement, Paladino could have faced disciplinary actions, including fines or expulsion from the Council. The agreement also requires Paladino to make a public statement clarifying that her posts were not directed at any council member or staff.

The case has sparked discussions about free speech and the responsibilities of public officials on social media. The settlement was facilitated by New York Supreme Court Justice Sabrina Kraus, who encouraged both parties to reach an agreement outside of court.
