Closing arguments are set to begin today in Harvey Weinstein's third rape trial in Lower Manhattan. The case centers on allegations made by Jessica Mann, who testified that Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty, claiming the encounter was consensual.
After three weeks of testimony, the prosecution called their final major witness, a trauma expert and forensic psychologist, to support Mann's account. Mann, who has testified against Weinstein multiple times, described meeting him at an engagement party in early 2013. She said Weinstein initially offered professional advice, but the relationship soon turned sexual and allegedly led to rape.
Weinstein's 2020 conviction for raping Mann was overturned, leading to this retrial. The jury failed to reach a verdict on her charge in a previous retrial involving multiple accusers. Mann, determined to seek justice, stated she is willing to endure the process as many times as needed.
Weinstein's defense team has portrayed Mann as an opportunist who engaged in consensual relationships with Weinstein for career advancement. They argue her emails to Weinstein, expressing affection, indicate a caring relationship. Mann has countered that she was managing a complex dynamic with a powerful man.
The trial, which has drawn significant attention due to its connection to the #MeToo movement, will soon be in the hands of the jury. The outcome could have lasting implications for both Weinstein and the broader conversation about sexual misconduct in Hollywood.
