If you look at the calendar and have Sunday, May 10th circled because the Knicks are playing that day- well technically, yes, you’d be correct. However, that’s not the main reason the second Sunday in May is important. Yes, it’s Mother’s Day, the day when we tell mom we’re going to take care of you for a change, buy flowers and dinner, and say thank you to the woman who nursed our boo-boos, packed our lunch, and reminded us to take an umbrella. Natalie Migliore took her Beat on the Street report to 5th Avenue, just outside Rockefeller Center, for 710 WOR’s Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning program to find out what Mom means to our listeners.
Migliore found one man in the crowd who decided to send his mom on a trip to see her mom: “I flew my mom out to Florida so she could see her mom, I also ordered her a fruit bouquet- I think that’s what it’s called, yeah- a fruit bouquet, for her and my grandma and my aunt to enjoy.”
Being “alone” to just relax for day was a popular item on the wish lists of many of the hard-working moms Migliore encountered, like this woman, who may have summed it up best: “I be with my child all the time, girl; I need some time to myself now, so I’m just gonna get drunk, go out with some friends, and just chill!”
Overall, though, gratitude for being there is the overwhelming sentiment Migliore herd from people, like this woman: “Oh God, it’s too early to cry, but she’s very special. Very independent, a strong black woman, and she raised me to be who I am, so I appreciate her, always.”
But another woman on the street happened to be standing next to her mom, who heard her daughter say, “She’s absolutely the best. She is, like, the kindest person, such an angel, so thoughtful, makes us all feel so special and lived- I can’t say enough good thigs about her, absolutely.” Mom’s response, through tears of joy: “It’s very emotional- it means a lot!”
