Health officials in New York City have confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated adult who visited Norma, a restaurant in Hell's Kitchen, on April 25 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The New York City Health Department is working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed. Despite this, officials emphasize that the risk to the general public remains low due to high vaccination rates among New Yorkers.
This case marks the fifth confirmed measles case in New York City this year, with all cases linked to international travel. The Health Department spokesperson highlighted the importance of vaccination, stating, "Vaccination is the best protection against measles." According to the department, the measles virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area, making it highly contagious.
ABC7NY reported that there have been no secondary cases linked to this incident. The restaurant Norma stated on social media that there is no known ongoing risk at their establishment.
In addition to the case in Manhattan, Long Island's Nassau County has confirmed its first measles case since 2024, involving an unvaccinated child. NBC New York noted that health officials are investigating the situation to prevent further spread.
Health experts continue to urge the public to ensure they are vaccinated with the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, which is crucial for individual protection and maintaining herd immunity.
