In a recent poll conducted by Siena University, New York Governor Kathy Hochul maintains a 16-point lead over her Republican challenger, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. The survey, released on Monday (May 5), shows Hochul leading Blakeman 49% to 33%, marking an increase from her 47% to 34% lead in March.

Despite her lead, Hochul's favorability and job approval ratings have declined. Her favorability rating now stands at 41-46%, down from 45-42% in March, while her job approval rating is at 48-44%, down from 52-40% in March. These are her lowest ratings since mid-2025. According to Siena pollster Steven Greenberg, the decline is most notable among independents, men, and New York City voters.

Blakeman remains relatively unknown to many voters, with 64% of respondents indicating they have not heard of him or have no opinion. This lack of recognition poses a challenge for Blakeman as he attempts to close the gap with Hochul.

The poll also revealed that voters are divided on New York's future, with 49% believing the state's best days are ahead, while 32% think they are behind. Additionally, 36% of voters feel the state does not spend enough on healthcare, education, and infrastructure, compared to 29% who believe the spending is adequate and 22% who think it is excessive.

With the election just 26 weeks away, both candidates are preparing for a competitive race. Hochul's campaign will need to address her declining approval ratings, while Blakeman will focus on increasing his visibility among voters.
