Will We See Another Triple Crown Winner This Year?

Golden Tempo won the Kentucky Derby this past weekend and will now be set up with the potential to be the 14th horse ever to win the Triple Crown. It’s been 8 years since the last Triple Crown winner which is a longer gap than usual but not nearly the longest of all time. Warner Wolf, legendary sportscaster, spoke with Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning about the gaps between Triple Crown winners and if he thinks Golden Tempo can become one too.

“We went 25 years until Secretariat finally won in 1973… and then all of a sudden we had 3 Triple Crown winners in 5 years,” Wolf told hosts Sliwa and Mendte. “Then we went 37 more years before [another Triple Crown winner]; now its been 8.”

Wolf thinks Golden Tempo could have some issues winning all three based on how he performed at the Kentucky Derby: “The Preakness coming up is the shortest race of the three, so Golden Tempo, if he ran the same race would have lost in the Preakness; he’s got a better chance at the Belmont which is the longest of the races.”
