As the FIFA World Cup approaches, officials in New York and New Jersey are issuing travel warnings for fans attending matches at MetLife Stadium. They are advising against walking the approximately 10 miles from Manhattan to the stadium along Interstate 95, citing safety concerns and legal prohibitions. Social media videos have suggested walking as an alternative to paying $150 for a round-trip NJ Transit ticket, but officials strongly discourage this option.

The high cost of transportation has been a major topic of discussion as the World Cup nears. NJ Transit has set the fare at $150, nearly 12 times the usual price for the 9-mile journey from Penn Station to MetLife Stadium. The fare increase aims to cover the $62 million cost of transporting fans during the tournament, with only $14 million offset by grants. NJ Transit President Kris Kolluri stated, "We're literally trying to recoup our costs."

Parking at the nearby American Dream Mall is limited and costly, with spots priced at $225. Shuttle buses from Manhattan are available for $80 round-trip, but these options are also expensive. Lawmakers are considering ferry services from West Harlem as a potential solution, although the logistics and finances are challenging.

The situation has led to a back-and-forth between New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and FIFA. Sherrill has called on FIFA to cover transportation costs, while FIFA has pointed out that other host cities, like Los Angeles and Dallas, have not increased their transit fares. FIFA warned that the high fares could deter fans and negatively impact the region's economic benefits from hosting the World Cup.

With less than 50 days until the opening match, officials are working to ensure safe and efficient transportation options for fans. The World Cup will feature eight matches at MetLife Stadium, including the final on July 19.
