King Charles and Queen Camilla have commenced their U.S. visit today, starting in Washington, D.C., where they are scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House. This six-day trip marks a significant event as the royal couple will also visit New York City and Virginia.
The visit comes amid heightened security concerns following a recent incident in Washington, D.C., where a gunman attempted to storm the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Despite these concerns, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the visit would proceed as planned, with minor adjustments to ensure safety. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche expressed confidence in the security measures, stating that the U.S. security system is robust.
During their time in Washington, King Charles is expected to address both chambers of Congress on Tuesday (April 28). This will be only the second time a British monarch has addressed Congress, the first being Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The speech will commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence and focus on the alliance and shared history between the U.S. and the UK.
In addition to the congressional address, the royal couple's itinerary includes a state dinner at the White House and a private tea with President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Their visit to New York City will involve commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks by meeting with first responders and victims' families. In Virginia, they will attend a block party celebrating America's 250th birthday and visit a national park.
The visit will conclude with a trip to Bermuda, marking King Charles' first official visit as monarch to a British territory. The royal couple's tour underscores the enduring relationship between the U.S. and the UK, despite recent political tensions.
