Experience From Inside The Ballroom At White House Correspondents Dinner

The White House Correspondents Dinner took place on Saturday night, and while many were unsure of what to expect from the event and what the President would say in his speech, no one expected what actually happened. A lone gunman attempted to charge into the ballroom hosting the event, and according to his manifesto, was planning on killing a number of high ranking officials in the Trump administration including the President himself. Jon Decker, WOR White House correspondent, spoke with Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning about his experience at the Correspondents’ Dinner as he was in the room when the shooting happened.

“Right by my table the Secret Service whisks by and escorts very quickly out of the ballroom the Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Steve Scalise comes right by my table surrounded by the Secret Service,” Decker told hosts Sliwa and Mendte. “The Secret Service also at the head table whisk away the Vice President, the First Lady and the President of the United States.”

Decker talked about the feeling in the room after the shooter was captured: “It was a surreal moment; there was silence while all this was taking place, just complete eerie silence in the immediate aftermath of that shooting.”
