New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently described his relationship with President Donald Trump as "honest, direct and productive," despite ongoing disagreements over a proposed tax on luxury second homes. During an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," Mamdani emphasized their shared love for New York City, even as Trump criticized the mayor's policies on Truth Social.
The controversy centers around a proposal, announced by Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, to impose a tax on secondary homes valued over $5 million. The plan aims to generate $500 million annually to address the city's $5.4 billion budget deficit. Trump took to Truth Social to express his disapproval, stating that Mamdani is "destroying" New York with his "TAX, TAX, TAX Policies."
Mamdani, however, defended the tax as a necessary measure to support essential city services like childcare and housing. He noted that 93% of New Yorkers support the tax, which targets the ultra-wealthy and absentee owners. He stated, "The President and I both want the city to succeed. This is how you do it."
Despite their policy differences, Mamdani and Trump have maintained a working relationship. They have met twice at the White House, discussing areas of cooperation and conflict, including immigration enforcement. Mamdani acknowledged their "many deep policy differences," but remains focused on what benefits New Yorkers.
Governor Hochul's support for the tax marks a shift in her stance on taxation, as she initially pledged not to increase taxes on residents. The proposal is expected to be part of the next state budget, pending approval from state lawmakers. Hochul referred to the measure as a "surcharge," while Mamdani called it a "tax."
As the debate continues, Mamdani remains committed to advocating for higher income and corporate taxes, despite opposition from Trump and others. He plans to continue lobbying in Albany for these measures, underscoring his dedication to addressing the city's fiscal challenges.
