As the weather gets warmer, and foot traffic increases on the streets of New York City, the dangers of getting struck by an e-bike also goes up. The bikes, mostly used by delivery drivers, have long been controversial in the city as many riders whip around the streets and sidewalks, which in some cases has ended in fatal accidents. Natalie Migliore, WOR Reporter, hit the streets of NYC to talk to people about how they feel about the e-bikes and the riders using them.
“Most of them are cautious, but a lot of them are just reckless… they want to be a car and bike at the same time, so they want to have both rights,” one person told Migliore. “They don’t follow the streetlights, they don’t use the bike lane also; for me it’s dangerous,” another person told Migliore.
One person told Migliore that policy on ridership needs to be fixed: “It also depends on the area I would say but being in midtown where there’s a lot of tourists there’s a lot of traffic, there’s a lot of congestion, I think there should be stricter policies on the bike riding.”
