NJ Transit is expected to announce ticketing details for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as early as tomorrow. According to a report from NBC New York, the agency may charge spectators over $100 for a round-trip ticket from New York City to MetLife Stadium during the World Cup. This represents a significant increase from the usual $12.90 fare on event days.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill stated that FIFA provided no funding for transportation, leaving NJ Transit with a $48 million bill to transport fans to and from the eight matches hosted at MetLife Stadium. Governor Sherrill emphasized that the cost should not fall on New Jersey commuters. "FIFA should pay for the rides, but if they don't, I'm not going to let New Jersey commuters get taken for one," she said in a video statement.
The World Cup host committee for New York City/New Jersey has not commented on the pricing, referring questions to NJ Transit. An agency spokesperson mentioned that ticket prices are not yet finalized but assured that regular commuters will not bear the costs. The matches are scheduled between June 13 and July 19, with the final match on July 19.
Additionally, FIFA will offer special tours of MetLife Stadium starting next month to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the World Cup. With limited parking at the stadium, fans will rely on trains, stadium shuttles, and ride-sharing options to reach the venue.
