Police across New York are intensifying efforts to curb impaired driving as part of a statewide enforcement campaign that runs through Monday. The initiative, part of New York's STOP-DWI program, aims to reduce incidents of impaired and reckless driving during high-risk periods.

The campaign, which began on April 9th, involves increased patrols and DWI checkpoints. According to the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, these measures are designed to remind motorists of the dangers and illegality of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Officials emphasize the importance of planning a safe way home before engaging in festivities, such as designating a sober driver or using a rideshare service.

The campaign comes as part of a broader effort to enhance road safety across the state. In 2025, during a similar enforcement period, over 55,650 tickets were issued, including 10,314 for speeding. Additionally, 1,224 individuals were arrested for driving while intoxicated.

The Riverhead Police Department is also participating in a concurrent campaign targeting distracted driving. This initiative, known as "Put the Phone Away or Pay," runs from April 9 to April 13 and focuses on reducing accidents caused by drivers using electronic devices. According to Riverhead Police, distracted driving remains a leading cause of crashes in New York.

Authorities urge drivers to adopt phone-free habits and report any suspicious or dangerous driving behavior to local law enforcement. The statewide crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to ensure safer roads for all New Yorkers.
