Major League Baseball is celebrating Jackie Robinson Day today (April 15), marking the 79th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's historic debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. This annual event commemorates Robinson's role in breaking baseball's color barrier and honors his enduring legacy.
As part of the celebration, all MLB players, managers, and on-field personnel will wear Robinson's iconic number 42 in Dodger Blue, regardless of their team's primary colors. This tradition, which began in 2009, is a tribute to Robinson's impact on the sport and society. The day also features a new campaign titled "We Are Jackie," narrated by Hall of Famer CC Sabathia, which highlights Robinson's courage, determination, and excellence.
Teams across the league are hosting various events to honor Robinson's legacy. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Robinson's former team, will hold a reflection ceremony at the Jackie Robinson statue in Centerfield Plaza, joined by Robinson's granddaughters and other dignitaries. The New York Yankees are hosting a Non-Profit Leadership Summit at Yankee Stadium, focusing on leadership and equity.
Other teams, such as the Arizona Diamondbacks and Baltimore Orioles, are making charitable contributions and hosting community events to support youth development and education. The Cincinnati Reds have organized a series of games and events, including the Joe Morgan HBCU Classic, to celebrate Robinson's legacy and promote higher education opportunities.
Jackie Robinson Day was first celebrated in 2004, and the practice of wearing number 42 became universal in 2009. MLB continues to honor Robinson's legacy by promoting diversity and inclusion within the sport.
