One of Zohran Mamdani's many campaign promises was city run grocery stores that would offer free or severely discounted items for those who need it. He has begun to deliver on that promise with the announcement of his first of five city run grocery stores set to open in East Harlem next year. Natalie Migliore, WOR Reporter, spoke with the people of New York City about how they feel about the stores and their tax money being used to pay for all of the costs.
“Well it’s good to hear that it’s going to go to something; good luck getting the public in behind it,” one person told Migliore. “It’s got to come from somewhere, so our taxes are going to pay for it unfortunately… but at least if it actually does happen, and it works, then I won’t feel so bad,” another person told Migliore.
One person believes we have to see the plan through despite projected pitfalls: “There’s no real way to control it, and there’s no real way to find out who deserves it and who doesn’t; is it going to work? In reality, no but you got to give it a shot.”
