Eric Swalwell was already one of the more polarizing figures in the U.S. Congress well before sexual assault allegations were made public. You either loved him or hated him for his fiery anti-Donald Trump rhetoric. Then a woman who had worked in the California Congressman’s office went public last week alleging that she had been sexually assaulted by Swalwell; by this week, three other women had come forward with similar claims. The allegations carried enough weight that Swalwell has decided to drop his bid for Governor of California. Since he was one of the leading candidates in that race, his departure is nothing short of game-changing.
Meanwhile, Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg has opened a sexual assault probe to investigate the first woman’s claims, as she alleges the incident happened in New York City two years ago. Swalwell contends that the charges are “flat false.” 710 WOR’s Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning program addressed the Swalwell mess, and Larry didn’t pull any punches indicating his loathing for the disgraced California congressman.
Larry pointed out that a key problem with Swalwell’s admission is that it will detract from Congress tackling any real issues as the House returns from break: “Today Congress comes back, and this is going to dominate conversation. The Democrats were going to bring up Epstein again because of what Melania [Trump] did, there’s the Save America Act that the Republicans want, they still are talking about some funding for homeland security- all of that today is going to be on the back burner because this is the story that’s getting all of the publicity. Wait til you see what happens today. Democrats and Republicans are going to try to push their own agendas; it’s going to be Eric Swalwell, Eric Swalwell, Eric Swalwell.”
Curtis, meanwhile, highlighted Swalwell’s apology statement as both an admission of guilt and a chance to reintroduce and old remedy for the adultery problem: “So why is we apologizing to his wife? So, some of it must be true… Why not require saltpeter in their breakfast? I mean, people laugh at this, but it did, for an entire generation of men- in prison, in the military- calm them down so that they were, uhm, flaccid and not turgid.”
