New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced plans to open the first city-owned grocery store in East Harlem, aiming to ensure all New Yorkers have access to affordable fresh groceries. The store, located at La Marqueta, is expected to open by 2027. This initiative is part of Mamdani's campaign promise to establish five city-run grocery stores across the city before the end of his first term.

During his "100 Days" address in Queens, Mamdani emphasized the importance of providing fresh, healthy food options to all residents, regardless of their income or ZIP code. NBC New York reported that the city will choose an existing store location for La Marqueta before its construction and opening.

The mayor's announcement was met with enthusiasm from supporters at the Knockdown Center on Flushing Avenue. PIX11 noted that the store's location has historical significance, as it was originally opened by Fiorello LaGuardia in 1936 to help working people save money on produce.

Mamdani's broader plans include improving public transportation and waste management in the city. He aims to speed up bus routes and implement containerized trash systems across all boroughs by the end of 2027.
