As the world anxiously awaited the 8pm deadline before President Trump’s threat to “end a civilization” came to pass, word broke that an 11th-hour case-fire had been reached. The United States and Iran would continue negotiations, although Iran continues to threaten ships that try to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, Iran still has possession of the uranium that it has been trying to enrich to weapons-grade quality. Ultimately, the deal leaves people scratching their heads and asking if it was worth the posturing and bloodshed. WOR’s Beat on the Street reporter Natalie Migliore hoofed it to Hell’s Kitchen, were she asked people for 710 WOR’s Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning program what they feel is the most likely outcome of the military effort. Most of the answers she received could be summarized in two words: I dunno.
When asked if the war effort was worth it, a woman told Migliore- with an annoyed huff for emphasis- “I honestly don’t know. I don’t think so. You really have to take everything day-by-day with everything that’s been going on, and it’s really frustrating.”
One man felt any ending is possible in the region, just not an ending that makes things hunky-dory immediately: “I think some parties don’t want it to end, and some parties want it to end I a certain way, and some parties want it to end tomorrow. Well, there’s three different opinions about what’s gonna happen, so no it’s not gonna go down like, oh it’s open, everything is great again. Iran has certain things they want, and it’s gonna come with a big ticket.”
Another man with a British accent told Migliore that whatever happens as a result of the war is all Donald Trump’s fault: “He’s got no idea. He’s a power-hungry person who’s got no understanding of the implications of his actions.”
