Megan Thee Stallion was rushed to a New York City hospital Tuesday after falling ill during a performance of Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway — forcing her to exit the show before it could finish.
According to Deadline, a spokesperson for the Broadway production confirmed the rapper was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. "During Tuesday night's production, Megan started feeling very ill and was promptly transported to a local hospital, where her symptoms are currently being evaluated," the statement read. "We will share additional updates as more information becomes available."
Variety reported that the New York City Fire Department responded to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in Manhattan after receiving a call about a person having trouble breathing. No further details about her condition have been released.
Her hairstylist, Kellon Deryck, also took to X — the platform formerly known as Twitter — to ask for support. "Everyone say a prayer for Megan, we are all at the hospital," he wrote.
Megan Thee Stallion made her Broadway debut in the role of Harold Zidler, the flamboyant nightclub impresario at the heart of the musical, on March 24th. As USA Today noted, she is the first woman ever to play the role in New York, joining a notable list of predecessors that includes Bob the Drag Queen, Tituss Burgess, Boy George, Wayne Brady, and Danny Burstein, who won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical for his portrayal.
As Zidler, the Grammy-winning rapper is onstage for roughly a third of the two-and-a-half-hour show. Her performance includes high-energy choreography numbers and a closing medley of her own hits, including 'WAP' and 'Savage.' The engagement was drawing strong crowds — the production played to 100% capacity in its opening week with Megan, netting $1.6 million and commanding top ticket prices of $599, according to The Broadway League.
When her casting was announced back in February, Megan said, "I've always believed in pushing myself creatively and theater is definitely a new opportunity that I'm excited to embrace. Broadway demands a different level of discipline, preparation and storytelling, but I'm up for the challenge and can't wait for the Hotties to see a new side of me."
She also shared a personal connection to the role. Speaking with USA Today earlier this month, she said her late mother, Holly Thomas, would have loved to see her on a Broadway stage. "So, loving 'Moulin Rouge!' and knowing that my mom loved theatre, I feel like she saw this for me," she said. "I feel like she manifested this for me. So, I feel really excited to do it."
Her limited engagement at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre was scheduled to run through May 17th. It remains unclear how the production will move forward during her absence. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set to close its seven-year Broadway run on July 26, 2026, after 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews.
