The Senate may have finally passed a bill that provides funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which means the national nightmare of arriving at the airport seven hours before your flight and standing in a line that moves at sloth-like speeds may finally be over. The deal that would end the six-week-long stalemate that partially closed the government would not affect ICE, which was fully funded. It also came on the heels of an emergency order signed by President Trump allowing incoming DHS head Markwayne Mullin to pay TSA agents who were going unpaid during the shutdown. The deal now goes to the House for final approval.
Many people may be breathing a sigh of relief, but on 710 WOR’s Curtis Sliwa and Larrry Mendte in the Morning program, cynical heads prevail. Curtis and Larry explored why the possible deal may be coming about simply because America’s politicians needed to go home for the Easter recess and take care of their own fundraising.
Curtis summed up how the logjam that Congress created seemed to finally vanish because the solution was designed not to help the American people, but rather the members of Congress: “What didn’t seem at all possible, a quagmire, in quicksand, negotiations were going nowhere, they were going around as I said, (like) Billy Preston, in circles- and then, miraculously, apparently it’s settled… It looked like Majority Leader (John) Thune- as I call him, ‘You rang?’, Lurch- and the putz, ‘Chucky Cheese’ Schumer, all of a sudden, they decided, yeah, we gotta break out, because, as you pointed out to me in one of the breaks, it’s all about the fundraising.”
Just a moment later, Larry stated an opinion that left Curtis stunned, as it dawned on him that both hosts were in agreement with an opinion that originally came from Barack Obama: “The superfunds is the worst thing that ever happened to this country. Citizens United- I agree with Obama on this- Citizens United was the worst thing that ever happened to this country, because it made it so that Congress is all about money right now, and personal finances. These guys live off these superfunds. There are so loose regulations on the superfunds that they can spend the money- we may not see them spending the money- but they can spend the money for trips and for (other perks).”
