Should NY Raise Taxes On The Rich?

Zohran Mamdani campaigned on raising taxes on the rich to help pay for his ideas for New York City, but those plans initially hit a road block when he brought them up to Albany, and with disapproval from New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The New York State Assembly and Senate are now more on board with the idea however and the plan is seeming more possible. Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte talked about the idea and how it could drive wealthy residents and businesses out of the state if the plans go through.

“I’m not angry if they decide to pick up shop and move their business or their personal wealth,” Sliwa said about the potential fallout of this tax plan. Larry Mendte believes that the potential Sliwa sees is definite: “They’re going to, and Hochul sees that… a lot of people realize that [the rich] pay almost half the taxes in the state; a little bit more than half in the city.”

Larry believes that the Democrats and lawmakers need to use some foresight to think about the ramifications of this action: “If enough of those people move out, what are you going to do then?”
