A proposal has been made to the New York City Council that would set the new minimum wage for workers in New York City at $30 an hour. The proposal comes as part of the effort to make life more comfortable for New Yorkers by getting more money in their pockets, but some are worried about the negatives of such a proposal. Natalie Migliore, WOR Reporter, hit the streets of the city to talk to people and get their thoughts on whether this proposal would be a good solution.
“It would be better for the economy, but I feel like they would just raise the prices for everything… it’s like a double-edged sword,” one person told Migliore. “It is possible, but they got to stop raising the prices of everything else… if everything is going up and also the salary, there’s no point,” another person told Migliore.
One New Yorker is worried about the effect it could have on small business owners: “New Yorkers, we’re going to support local businesses, but at the same time, can local businesses afford to pay $30 an hour?”
